Mammals

More than 30 mammal species lives in Goričko. Most species abundant group are bats with 15 species. Hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor), badger (Meles meles), pine marten (Martes martes), beech marten (Martes foina) and common ferret (Mustela putorius) are all nocturnal. In the last few years, Golden jackal (Canis aureus) became a regular resident of Goričko.  Well known among locals is red fox (Vulpes vulpes). Among rodents red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and fat dormouse (Glis glis) are important for seed dispersion and subsequently for forest regeneration. Goričko is home to the most vital otter population in Slovenia and has one of the largest populations of game.
