Church St. Joseph in Cankova

The most significant building of the  village in the central square of Cankova was built in 1718 with western belfrey and renovated in 1754. The presbytery is as wide as a nave. The church has a cross-shaped floor plan. The simple exterior of the church is adorned with corner rustics, mortar borders around the windows and a profiled attic wall. We enter the church to the south through the entrance under the high bell tower.  The presbytery in the north is as wide as the nave and on the east and west sides are chapels. From the presbytery we step into the sacristy, which joins the north side of the west chapel. The arches of the nave and the side chapels are decorated with decorative paintings of saints and the central scene with Joseph and Mary and two angels above them. Year 1900 is inscribed in the presbytery of decorative arch. The decoration of the vault is complemented by the figures of saints Peter and Paul on the side walls of the presbytery. The martyrs are standing in semi-circular niches. We recognize Peter by the key he holds in his left hand and Paul by the sword, an attribute of his martyrdom. On the center, main wall of the presbytery is Kregars scene of Joseph with Mary, supplemented by angel figures with inscriptions. In 2004 the church was renovated and repairs  disturbing figures that were depicted on emphasized background. After repainting of the painting from 1900, Kregars fresco was stripped of the natural color frame; the fresco was re-established after the restoration work. On the part of the arch above the central scene is depiction of two angels on clouds.  The figure of two saints in and scenes of angels is complemented by four more evangelical figures on the lower part of the vault. In the presbytery are depicted Luke and Mark, Matthew and John in the nave. Evangelists are depicted as sitting  in the hand have a pen with which they writing the gospel.

The characters of the saints and the scene with the angels on the clouds demonstrate the high craftsmanship of the painter, who signed himself as T. (Source: www.cankova.si)
